My Approach to Trauma Therapy for Philadelphia, PA

Located 10-15 minutes from Benjamin Franklin, Walt Whitman, and Betsy Ross bridges, counseling for trauma survivors is available for you. Being a survivor myself, I know the struggles that can after that wound. Maybe you are trying to process childhood abuse, sexual assault, relational, or domestic abuse. Or perhaps you have gone through the sudden loss of a loved one. When something like any of those happen, it’s too painful to go through the emotions and thoughts. And so, you do what you must in order to just get by each day. You’re doing whatever it takes in that “survival mode.”

Being on “survival mode” has helped us to feel a level of safety. However, you may find yourself going through unrest. Your mind and nervous system have felt unsettled since that past wound. As a result, you just want relief and peace. In order to help you reach that, I use Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) and Internal Family Systems (IFS). Both ART and IFS helps those wounded parts of you carrying hurting feelings, thoughts, and sensations that you have daily.

The beautiful thing is that you play an important role in your healing. You and I will use both your brain and body’s natural abilities to help you unburden. ART does this through relaxing eye movements and uses your left and right brain. Thus, you will be able to recall past memories in a way that no longer takes control over your life. This is done through erasing, replacing, rescripting those hurtful memories/images.

IFS can also feel relieving. It can help you develop compassion for those wounded parts that may’ve needed your attention for some time now. You will be able to embody who you are truly are at your core. Maybe this means you are calm, confident, creative, and curious. Moreover, you may be patient and persistent. So, all those qualities of your true Self can help those parts of you living with the burdens of trauma. My clients can attest to both IFS and ART in ways that talk therapy could not. I am an IFS Level One trained therapist.

Trauma Therapy FAQs

  • There are factors to notice in your emotional, physical, or mental being. You may see that your mood, sleeping, or eating habits have changed. Some people have nightmares that provoke more fear. Also, you may be guarding yourself wherever you go. If you have been avoiding people or places, this can also be a sign that you may need therapy.

  • You keep the knowledge, so you will not lose the facts. What you will lose is the pain related to the memories/images. ART and IFS both make this possible. On one hand, ART’s eye movements help restructure the way your brain first stored the hurtful memories. Or maybe it’ll be IFS’s ability to unburden the wounded parts. It will feel like you get that power back for yourself.

  • Trauma therapy can be done in a safe way that will resonate with your mind and nervous system well. It has helped all my clients. We see the relief in their symptoms, such as being able to sleep and eat more. Importantly, in ART and IFS, you don’t have to disclose any details on your trauma during session. We can go at your (and your parts’) discretion.

  • Although I am not trained in EMDR, I’ve heard it’s been helpful. It is more “popular” than ART, but ART is also beneficial for a lot of people. ART actually derived from EMDR, but the founder of ART explains the differences: Differences Between EMDR and ART

  • Anyone! Maybe you are looking for you or a loved one. And honestly, even therapists may have gone through trauma therapy. If a trauma has affected your life in any way, it may benefit to engage in therapy overall. I’m here to partner with you along the way.
