My Approach to Trauma Focused Therapy in Cherry Hill, NJ

Counseling trauma survivors means being mindful that everyone reacts to trauma uniquely. In other words, it’s a sensitive subject. For example, it can be about childhood abuse, sexual assault, physical assault. Maybe it’s the sudden loss of a loved one. When something traumatic happens, you try to push that to the back of your mind to forget it happened. But it feels difficult when you keep having triggers of it. When they happen, your brain thinks the trauma is happening again, causing unrest.

You’ve been anxious, on edge, like you want to run from the pain. As a result, that “fight-or-flight,” high alert response is tiring. Trauma may’ve put you in “survival mode.” To clarify, this is when you’re doing anything…just to get by. To relieve you from “survival mode,” I use a few different approaches. These include Internal Family Systems (IFS) and Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART). Both ART and IFS guide to understand feelings, thoughts, and sensations that you have daily.

It is important for us to use both your brain and body’s natural abilities to help you resolve your trauma. ART, especially, helps to do this through relaxing eye movements. Using your left and right brain, ART allows you to feel empowered in moving forward from your trauma. You feel in control and it’s your story now through rescripting, erasing, and replacing those painful memories/images.

IFS’s ability to help you find that well-deserved compassion for each part of you can feel relieving. Sometimes we can feel discouraged by thoughts, feelings, or sensations. But IFS helps us to explore and understand the purpose behind them. You begin to relate to parts of you (even the ones you thought were weak or disliked) with more compassion. By sensing who you truly are at your core Self, you become more connected and confident. This brings more balance and harmony within you. I am an IFS Level One trained therapist.

Many clients come to me after having been in therapy before. Their number one concern was that talk therapy did not help them with a previous therapist. Fortunately, through ART and IFS, clients have mentioned how life-changing therapy has been this time around.

Trauma Therapy FAQs

  • You want to notice any of the following to see if you may need to do trauma counseling. First, you may be having mood shifts, changes in your sleep or eating habits, nightmares. Also, you may be paying closer attention (than usual) to your surroundings. If you find yourself avoiding certain places or people, this is also a sign. We can discuss more once we meet.

  • No, you will not lose the facts; you will lose the pain associated with the memories/images. ART makes this possible. The eye movements help to restructure the way your brain initially stored the traumatic memories. You become in control. It’s so rewarding, and I’ll explain more once we meet.

  • Trauma therapy has helped many of my clients. We see the instant effects it has on their progress, such as better sleep and a sense of relief. In fact, you don’t even have to tell me specific details on your trauma during our sessions. We will go at your discretion. The trauma therapy that we do is safe.

  • From what I’ve heard, EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) therapy is helpful! It is more widely known than ART. ART actually contains factors of EMDR, but the founder of ART explains the differences: Differences Between EMDR and ART

  • For you, your neighbor, a family member, a friend...anyone really. It doesn’t matter how intense your symptoms may be versus another person's. If your life has changed because of the trauma, it’s helpful to do therapy overall. I’m here to guide you through your healing in a safe way.
